The German offensive in December 1944 became the basis for this all-star Hollywood take on the Battle of the Bulge. Henry Fonda is an officer who predicts the assault, Robert Ryan and Dana Andrews are Army brass skeptical of his intuitions, and Robert Shaw (his hair dyed yellow and his eyes glinting with malice) is a German officer leading the tank attack. Shaw is certainly the most compelling thing about the film, especially in his philosophical debates with ambivalent underling Hans Christian Blech. Elsewhere, the movie jumps around to sidebar stories (cowardly James MacArthur becomes a leader, wheeler-dealer Telly Savalas falls in love) while messing around with the historical facts of the battle. There are interesting episodes, such as the Malmedy massacre of American POWs and the Germans’ use of English-speaking spies, but overall Battle of the Bulge has the feeling of having been patched together from different scripts. On the physical level the movie comes up short, with the Spanish locations rarely suggesting the wintry misery of the battle, and the use of models and studio sets highly inadequate. A number of war films from this era are compelling on their own terms, but in the wake of Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, this one looks antique. –Robert Horton

Summary of Movie

Sooner or later, the Mystery, Inc. gang had to take on Mexico’s legendary Bigfoot equivalent, El Chupacabra, and that’s precisely what they do in this entertaining, feature-length, Scooby-style investigation into the paranormal. The young snoops smell a conspiracy, and as they chase down clues their search for the truth leads them into sundry Mexican antiquities–ancient tombs and temples–where danger increases exponentially. There are the usual rituals: Our time-warped heroes run like the wind during encounters with alleged ghouls–particularly best-buds Shaggy and Scooby, when they aren’t stuffing themselves with delicious Scooby Snacks. Jessica Lange gives a career performance in a role she was born to play: the talented and troubled Frances Farmer. Farmer’s awful trajectory travels from bright Seattle girl to 1930s Hollywood starlet to degraded (eventually lobotomized) mental patient. Lange, who has the blond, clean look of Farmer’s heyday, goes into these places with the fierce abandon of a true believer. Her performance, the lush John Barry score, and the period re-creation are all worth applauding; almost everything else fails. Everyone except Farmer is grotesquely caricatured to fit the movie’s thesis, which is that if you are intelligent and nonconformist, the system will resolutely destroy you. (The medical establishment is evil incarnate.) This simple conclusion seems inadequate and disrespectful of Frances Farmer’s tragic problems. For a radiant glimpse of what the real Farmer had to offer, see Howard Hawks’s Come and Get It, which bristles with excitement over a new discovery. –Robert Horton
