Website Hosting Secrets

I won’t point any fingers here or link to any sites because this little secret is everywhere on the web.

How much do you know about  hosting a website on the web?  The answer to that question for most people is "0".

There is nothing wrong with not knowing about website hosting. Unless you do it for a living.

I have just let this little secret slide without saying anything because I figured it out and thought if I did most everyone else would.

If you have ever shopped for website hosting you probably have seen the offers of unlimited space, databases, and bandwidth, usually under $10 a month. This is a great deal! I would not tell anyone to shy away from these great deals. Just beware of what "unlimited" really means in the hosting world……

Is It Free Themes Or Just Me?

Maybe I just have more than my share of problems with the free scripts and free blog themes.

I know I am not a college educated programmer or even webmaster but  I can figure things out pretty quickly and can usually troubleshoot and repair a php script  after a bit of reading. So why do I have so many little "glitches" ?

I believe it is the free scripts and themes I use. Lets face it, the free stuff is not going to be cutting edge!  As fast as things change on the web a free script or theme doesn’t have a chance. It seems every time I get the bugs worked out of my WordPress Blog The alert to update the script shows up again! Then the plugins or themes I have been using won’t work and have to be changed ……. the circle continues……….

Easy Website Traffic

One of the best ways of bringing visitors to your web pages that few people understand or even know about is your sig line.

Sig line? The Information you ad with your signature like:

Scott Reynolds,

Here Is Yours LLC

Free Website Traffic

You can set one or more up in your favorite text editor and save them to your desktop. Your email client has easy instructions on how to use these files without even going and opening them! It will do it automatically every time you send email!

Your email is just the tip of the iceburg. Using your signature line on every post on forums (some are limited to 1 or 2 links),  ad your sig line to your author bio when submitting articles or adding content to any website other than your own (just copy and paste from your sig file).  Ad your sig file to every community profile you you have!

Every time you ad your links to a different site you are adding a link in to your site. Now just going and linking to every site you can, may get you discredited by the search engines. The more targeted to your copy the links are, the more influence they will have, So be sure your email or post is relevant to your blog or page you are linking to. This is where more than one sigline file may come in handy.

For those sites without the "ad link" in their editor here is the html code for a hyperlink (links like under my name above)

<a href="http://hereisyours.com">Here Is Yours</a>

will look like

Here Is Yours

and send whoever clicks on it to my Here Is Yours home page. Between the quotations is the URL of the page you want them to go to, enter your page URL there ( the address in the address box of your browser when you are on the page) you can copy it from the address box of your browser and paste it between the quotes like:

<a href="http://yoururlhere.com">Here Is Yours</a>

then change the text between >    <a/> to change what the link reads, instead of Here Is Yours like:

<a href="http://yoururlhere.com">Your Text Here</a>

This hyper link will send you to the address yoururlhere.com (actually is a site there) and read Your Text Here like this:

Your Text Here

Copy and paste the code to a file named hyper link code and save it where you can find it. then you can simply copy and paste it where ever you want a hyperlink and easily change the url and  text to match your needs!

Wearing Safety Glasses

A little story about my day today…….

All went well until I was to check out a tractor with no hydraulics. I started the tractor and the loader and lift arms worked fine. Hmmmm, must be the wrong tractor, so I went back in the shop and checked. Yup! The right one! Driving it into the shop I found nothing wrong. I don’t like jobs where I can’t recreate the problem….. pretty hard to fix.

I decided to service the transmission which is where the hydraulic system oil comes from. checking the oil I found it very low, not even on the dipstick, Not a big deal usually because that means it is about 2 gallons low out of 8 or above on most tractor of this size.  There is an internal transmission screen that sometime doesn’t get checked because you have to drain the system to check it. I decided to go there, I figured that would tell me the level of the oil, let me know of other problems if the screen was dirty and give me a head start if I needed to change the oil.

I drained the system by pulling the big pug that holds the screen in place, this flushes out any impurities as I pull the screen. (I kept getting dirt in my eyes every time I moved something under there so I went and put on my safety glasses to hopefully keep at least the big chunks out)

Only 2 gallons! There is my problem! Not enough oil to maintain hydraulic functions if not on level ground. And where the tractor came from I don’t think there is a level spot!

But I saw no major leaks? Where is the oil going? Well, I guess I will have to put the plugs back in  and fill it up so I can run it some more to find the leaks. Not looking forward to having to pull the oil back out if the leak is low in the system, its late in the day and I want to get this job out………..

HA! The transmission case is wet with oil above the screen plug I had removed! There is a vale bolted to the transmission case with o-rings between there. I bet an o-ring blew! I went to removing parts that were in the way or removing this valve, one such item was a quick coupler for the loader, no problem, I uncoupled it and folded the attached hose up over the footrest and laid the coupler there.

Removed the valve and sure enough an o-ring was missing. I replaced both o-rings and climbed under the tractor on my creeper to reinstall the valve.

CRACK!!!!!

The quick couple (female, the biggest one!) connected to the hydraulic hose with a cast iron 90% elbow hit me just below the right eye!

I saw a flash of light and felt a sharp pain in my cheek radiating down through my teeth. I am a mechanic so muttered a few short words, felt for blood (there was none) and went back to work installing the valve. I had the valve on and only one more fitting to attach when I noticed I couldn’t see very well out of my right eye and it felt kinda funny. I reached up and felt the egg under my eye, and yes it was the size of a large chicken egg……. time to stop working you dummy!

I got up….. quickly sat back down…… lol

Fellow workers noticed I was having a problem and came to my rescue. I was ushered over to the break area and sat down. I was offered an ice cold bottle of water to hold on my eye.

The swelling went down to a very puffy eye size and the lightheadedness subsided.

I got the rest of the day off (1/2 an hour lol) stopped at the hospital on the way home (right next to my house) and for some reason still got home early.

Good news is my eye is OK I will have a nice shiner for a while though.

I am glad I took the time to put on my safety glasses, if the coupler had directly hit my eye with that force it would have exploded……. not a fun thought.

So if everyone doesn’t mind……… this post is all I am doing (besides email) tonight.

You are still welcome to sign up for your free blog and start posting! Yesterday the network got 38,000 hits! I am sure that was a spike but each spike gets higher! 2 years ago I never would have dreamed a site of mine could bring in that many hits!

Upgraded Blogs

After still seeing problems with the blogs on the network I did some more house cleaning today, then upgraded our network from the wordpress mu 1.5.2 to the new 2.6. You will find some widgets and theme customization and probably some themes that will not work with the new platform. Life is fun!

Please send any problem reports to support@trafficblognet.com

I left out FireStats of course. Most all of the other plugins that have been working are still available but probably turned off on your blog. Simply go to "Pugins" on your admin menu (left side in the blue bar on top) and turn on the plugins you want to use.

I have noticed that some of the plugins like Headspace seem to work better

Keep it Free

I made the executive decision to completely remove FireStats. I have cleaned my hosting account of all unused or trial scripts trying to stop the intermittent error messages. It seems to only pop up when a script runs but I haven’t been able to single it out.

It can possibly be a total different site because we are on a shared server (sorry folks, I can’t afford $150 + a month so you can have free blogs!) but the bottom line is I can’t and won’t keep chasing my tail.

Don’t worry, Trafficblognet’s Free Web Traffic is here to stay! This network will make the members that pay attention more money than they would ever dream! The networks Alexa traffic rank is climbing  like a rocket! About 300,000 improvement since Aug 1! That should put us in the top 100,000 sites by the end of the month!

Thats a lot of traffic!

And you can grab your share for FREE!

Traffic Update 8-12-08

The FireStats seems to be working fine so far (1 day). Traffic jumped back up. Its funny how a small script problem will drop traffic stats.  Of course we had a drop when I shut down a couple hundred spam blogs or splogs. It has been climbing slowly since. Slower now because I have put the splogs IP’s in the banned list. Firestats works great for finding the spam IP’s I noticed tonight, it looks like some of the banned IP’s are still trying to signup. Bots aren’t very smart I guess

I will have to get tougher on the spammers as we grow, but right now they are bringing in some pretty targeted traffic. I’m sorry to say they are better at selecting tags than most.    !!! Everyone must remember the tags or search terms are how people find your copy through search engines so they are very important! They also have to be in the copy! I will work on some more posts on tag research and try to set up a live workshop if I get enough interest.

(Check out the Polls in the sidebar to the right and vote YES in the new Tags Training one if you want a live tags training.)

SSSSSSHHHHHH!

Fire Stats has been back on for 1/2 an hour with no problems!

It may go back down but I have the script author helping so I will make it work.  (If everyone is quiet maybe it will keep working!)

NOT!

This is a blog network! Keep posting! Work the scrips and server!

By the way? I have just documented a few little problems anyone can have when operating their website or blog on their own hosting. I have not had to contact my host yet but if the problem arises again, that is the next step!

I spoke to soon!

I tried to have FireStats activated on install so all members can use it and crashed the whole site!

I am still trying!

FireStats Back On

After conversing with FireStats support and programmers I have tried to trim the script a little so all members can easily see their web traffic stats. We are after all in the business of creating website traffic for our members and want you to see the results of your work as soon as possible!
